Dear Friends,

It is my privilege and honor to welcome you to our 6th Annual Korean Cultural Expo. As the scope of our yearly presentation grows, so does our patronage and many supporters. We are fortunate to count as friends the government of Korea and its Embassy in Washington, the Governor of Maryland, and so many others from Virginia, Washington DC, the surrounding Korean American communities and US institutions.

We are a non-profit organization with a membership of curators, artists, and people who value deeply the heritage found in all things of cultural significance and share a passion to communicate beauty, in all its forms, to others. The most passionate of all are the many artists, both here and in Korea, that make up The Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation. It is they who give selflessly and tirelessly so that we may enjoy the fruits of their labor and the full range of the art and soul of Korea.

We often begin to know another land by the food its people enjoy. For our 6th annual event, we hope that you will come to enjoy Korea’s visual art, dance, music and customs in a context of the rituals and preparation associated with the food that sustains the Korean nation. One of the healthiest diets in the world has been developed through 5000 years of our cultural evolution. It’s our pleasure to share it with you. It is food for a happy heart.

Thank you for joining us in this celebration of Korea’s Culture.

Mrs. Tammy Lee Pantages

Chairwoman, Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation
Commissioner, Maryland Governor’s Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs

Congratulatory message

April 23, 2011

It is with great pleasure to congratulate on the 2011 Korean Cultural Expo held in Washington D.C., the capital city of the U.S.

I acknowledge President Tammy Lee and her colleagues at the Korea America Culture Arts Foundation, and the Korean-American community for making this great event possible.

It was six years ago that this cultural expo started. Over the years, it has been a place of unity for the Korean community in the U.S. to get together and let their American friends know more of Korean tradition and culture. I believe that this year’s event will also make the second and third generations of Korean-Americans boost their self esteem and enrich our traditional and cultural asset as well as contribute to strengthen friendship between our two countries.

In particular, this year has a very special event to introduce Korean food. I hope that the Korean-American community, like “Bibimbab,” whose flavor is enhanced by separately cooked ingredients, will be more united, prosperous, and valued as it always has been.

Hoping the expo will be a great success, I wish President Tammy Lee and the staff members of the Korea-America Culture Arts Foundation, and all the participants the best of luck and happiness.

Thank you.

Hak-kyu SOHN

Chairman of the Democratic Party

Republic of Korea

Congratulations on the 2011 Korean Cultural Expo that will present treasured Korean culture in the U.S. I thank and extend my sincere respect to President Taemi Lee and the staffers of the Korea America Culture Arts Foundation USA for making great efforts to organize this festival.

The Korea America Culture Arts Foundation has made tremendous efforts to introduce Korea’s culture, arts, tradition and spirit to the general public of the U.S. The foundation has been at the forefront of bringing our culture to the international community as well as helping Korean-American children and youth, who have less opportunities to have first hand experiences with Korean culture, to learn and aware of their roots and identity. I express my deepest gratitude and compliments to the foundation for boosting pride and self-esteem in Korea in this far-away land.

The U.S. is more than just an ally to Korea. We have the closest and strongest diplomatic, security and economic ties with each other. As many as two million Korean people are now living in the U.S., making the largest overseas Korean community around the world. So, it’s like a brother country to Korea. Therefore, promoting mutual understanding through cultural exchanges is very important and valuable between our two countries and peoples. I hope that the 2011 Korean Cultural Expo will contribute to developing the relations between our two countries as well as bringing our culture closer to the general public of the U.S.

The Grand National Party will also do its part to make you more proud of being Korean. We will provide our best assistance for you to be more successful in the U.S. We will stand ready to support our proud Koreans in any way we can.

I wish you all the best and happiness.

Ahn Sang-soo

Chairman of the Grand National Party

Republic of Korea

It is a great pleasure to celebrate this meaningful occasion, the 6th Korean Culture Expo of Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation. Let me begin by extending my sincere gratitude to President Tammy Lee and staff members of Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation for their tireless efforts in preparing for this event.

Since 102 Korean immigrants arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1903, Korean Americans have traveled a long road to earn their reputation as one of the most prosperous ethnic groups in the United States. They have made crucial contributions to American prosperity and added their own exceptionality to America’s culture. The influence of Korean culture may be observed in many facets of the diverse and rich American culture.

The Korean Culture Expo has helped immeasurably to bridge our two cultures and has provided opportunities to bring us all together in a spirit of harmony and unity. Being open-minded towards other cultures is an essential value for us to pursue unity in diversity as globalized Koreans.

I believe that today’s event will serve as a good opportunity to enhance mutual understanding among diverse ethnic and cultural groups. It will also help Korean Americans reflect on the intrinsic value of the traditional Korean culture.

I truly hope that all the participants will enjoy today’s festival and I wish for the continued prosperity of the Korean-American Cultural Arts Foundation, the Korean American Association of Southern Maryland.

Yoon, Soon Gu

Consul General

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea
