Jihwa is a flower made of Korean traditional paper, Hanji. It is a traditional Korean craft that has been produced for Buddhist ceremonies, shamanic events, and private events since ancient times. Earth flowers are often made in the form of peonies, chrysanthemums, and lotuses.
“This tradition is the legacy of our ancestors who respected life, whether animal or plant. If we understand the significance of this tradition, we can understand its value today.”

Lee Ju-hwan is a Hanji flower artist. This master craftsman was designated as Gyeonggi-do Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 63 Geohwajang Technician, and was also listed on the representative list of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
Lee was born in 1967 and became a monk when he was young. His legal name is Seok-yong.
As a Buddhist practitioner, Seok-yong devoted himself to making traditional paper flowers from the beginning and became a national master. Received numerous commendations and commendations, including a commendation from a member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea and a commendation from a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Kyungsung University and Geumgang University held numerous invitational exhibitions and lectures.

‘자연의 빛깔에서 얻어지는 고귀함’
KCAA, ‘한지 꽃과 천연 염색’ 개강
한미문화예술재단(이사장 이태미, KACAF)의 한국문화예술아카데미(KCAA)가 인간문화재 제63호 지화장 석용 스님, 이주환 장인을 초빙해 ‘한지 꽃과 천연 염색’ 교실을 연다.
이주환 지화장은 “이번 수업은 자연으로부터 얻어지는 모든 재료를 이용해, 인위적으로 절대 만들어 낼 수 없는 천연 염료의 신비로운 빛깔을 만나볼 수 있는 매우 이색적인 수업이 될 것”이라며 “옷과 스카프, 손수건, 한지 등에 자연의 싱그러움을 담아 내는 감격적인 시간을 만들겠다”고 말했다.
이 지화장에 따르면, 식물성 재료에 속하는 야생화 풀 종류, 쪽을 비롯해 일련초의 홍화, 치자, 자초, 강황, 양파껍질 등에서 채취해 낼 수 있는 자연 색들과, 동물성 재료로 분류되는 벌레의 배설물, 나무에서 자라는 미생물 분비물 등에서도 천연 염료를 얻을 수 있다. 거기에 돌, 흙, 황토 같은 광물성 재료에도 천연의 빛깔이 존재한다고 이 장인은 설명했다.
이태미 이사장은 “화학 염색으로 물든 옷을 입고, 화학 재료들이 지천에 널린 공간에 사는 현대인들에게, 이번 수업은 천연 빛깔의 고귀함과 인내해야만 얻을 수 있는 자연의 재료들로 부터 느긋함을 배우는 귀한 시간이 될 것”이라고 말했다. 그는 “인간 문화재가 직접 나서 전수하는 다시 없을 좋은 기회에 많은 사람들의 관심을 기대하며, 아울러 비법을 전수받아 공유하고 전파하는 교사로서의 역할을 해 낼 분들의 참여도 기다린다”고 말했다.
이번 ‘한지 꽃과 천연 염색’ 수업은 7월15일까지 메릴랜드 월도프 소재 아카데미 본원(3030 Old Washington Rd. Waldorf, MD 20601)과 버지니아 애난데일의 분원(7202 Poplar sheet #B201 Annandale, VA 22003)에서 각각 열린다. 수업 시간은 개인 상황에 맞춰 조정 선택할 수 있다.

The Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation (KACAF) will present a hands-on workshop: “Jihwa” – Korean Traditional Paper Flower Making.
Jihwa are flowers made from hanji, which is a traditional Korean mulberry paper. They are traditional Korean craftwork usually made for Buddhist rituals and shamanistic or private events in ancient times. Jihwa is often created in the forms of peonies, chrysanthemums, and lotuses.
