“동서양의 하모니” 한국명인들의 천년의 소리와 몸짓
‘천년의 소리와 몸짓’ 이란 주제로 열리는 이번 축제에는 대한민국 최고의 명인들이 참가, 워싱턴 한인과 주류사회에 한국전통의 소리와 몸짓을 첫 소개.행사에는 한국 최고의 전통 한복 디자이너인 이수동씨를 비롯 중요 무형문화재 제 27호 승무 전승 보유자인 정재만 숙대 교수, 원장현 국립국악원 악장, 단국대 국악과 교수로 재직중인 전정민 명창, 백인영 예봉문화원 원장, 서라미(헌터 칼리지, 종족음악과 재직), 스콧 에서르(뉴욕 음대교수)등이 출연
첫번째 무대인 한복패션 쇼에는 한국 최고의 전통한복 디자이너인 이수동 선생이 화려한 궁중 복식 10여점을 선보여 많은 박수갈채를 받았다. 특히 미스 워싱턴 출신 김하늘(메리마운트대)양과 훤칠한 키에 건장한 체격의 레이 리(회사원)군 등이 왕비복과 왕의 옷 등을 입고 나와 관객의 눈길을 사로잡았다.
무형문화재 승무 전승 보유자인 정재만 교수의 ‘태평무’와 서라미(헌터칼리지 종교음악과 재학)의 25현 가야금 연주, 한국 최고의 대금 연주자 원장현의 연주가 이어졌다
단국대 국악과 교수로 재직중인 전정민 명창의 ‘흥부가’, 백인영 예봉문화원 원장의 가야금 산조가 이어졌으며, 한미 음악인들이 함께한 피아노와 드럼, 가야금 그리고 아쟁이 어우러진 퓨전 음악으로 이날 공연의 대단원의 막을 내렸다.
이날 공연에 앞서 로버트 얼릭 메릴랜드 주지사, 권태면 총영사, 그리고 임석구 코리아 모니터 발행인의 축사가 있었다. 이 자리에서 이태미 한인회장은 얼릭 주지사로부터 감사장을 전달받았다.
이날 공연은 한국 최고 명인·명창들이 최초로 한 곳에 모여 펼친 공연답게 약 500여명의 관객이공연장을 가득메워 한국정통 문화에 대한 미국인들과 한인들의 뜨거운 관심을 반영했다..
The Korean Community Enjoys Special Night

Members of Southern Maryland’s Korean American community and others turned out Saturday evening for performances by master artists from Korea in a program at the Northpoint High School theater in Waldorf.
The program was a presentation of the Korean American Association of Southern Maryland, the Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation and the Korean Embassy.
Entitled “Intangible Cultural Assets,” the show brought together performers that the South Korean government considers “the best of the best,” according to Moka Pantages of the Southern Maryland association. She added that such artists “bear the responsibility of maintaining their respective Korean cultural art forms, whether it be music, dance, etc., and preserving it for posterity.”
Performers included In Young Beak on Korean stringed instruments; Jang Hyun Won on a traditional Korean bamboo flute; Scott Ethier singing and playing the piano; Joen Jeong Ming doing Korean folk songs; Je Man Jung performing traditional dance; and Rami Seo on the kayageum, a plucked zither.
Audience members included Taemyon Kwon, consul general of the Embassy of Korea. Officials attending included state Sen. Thomas M. Middleton (D-Charles), state Del. Murray D. Levy (D-Charles) and Charles County Commissioners President Wayne Cooper (D). Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R) sent a representative who announced that tomorrow will be Maryland Chusok Day, a Korean holiday similar to Thanksgiving.
Pantages said the costumes worn by the performers, as well as others represented in a fashion show that also took place Saturday, will be on display at the Smithsonian. The sponsors of the performances in Waldorf are working on presenting another show in the D.C. area this year or early in 2007.
