남부 메릴랜드 한인회 아-태 문화 행사 성황리에 끝나
한국의 전통 문화를 소개하는 행사가 남부 메릴랜드 월돌프 지역에 있는 웨스트레이크 고등학교에서 미국의 주류 인사들과 한인들이 대거 참석한 가운데 열렸습니다.
5월 아, 태문화의 달을 앞두고 한국 문화등 아태 문화를 미국 주류 사회에 알리기 위해 행사의 일환으로 2006 아-태 문화 페스티벌이 지난 4월 22일 열었습니다.
이날 행사에는 무용과 음악, 음식등 한국의 다양한 전통 문화가 선보여 남부 메릴랜드 지역 주류 인사들로부터 박수 갈채를 받았습니다.
남부 메릴랜드 한인회(회장 이태미)가 주관 한미문화예술재단과 흑인 지도자 회의(BLCE)가 공동 주최하고 주미 한국대사관 재외동포재단 등이 후원한 이날 행사에는 500여명의 지역 주민들이 참석, 한국의 전통 혼례와 무용, 사물놀이, 탈춤, 북춤, 장고춤등 한국 문화에 대해 아낌없는 성원과 환호를 보냈습니다.
이날 사물놀이로 시작된 한국 공연은 이태미 회장의 대북 연주, 워싱턴 무용단의 장고춤과 부채춤 등에 이어 한국의 전통 혼례 순으로 진행됐습니다.
특히 이날 선보인 한국의 전통 혼례는 남부 메릴랜드 지역에 거주하는 30여명의 한인 부모와 자녀들이 직접 나서 결혼식의 첫 관문인 함 들이기, 신랑과 가마를 탄 신부입장, 교배례, 합근례, 폐백등 전통 혼례의 전체 과정을 선보여 행사 참석자들로 부터 좋은 반응을 얻었습니다.
또 이날 행사장에 김치 만들기와 김밥 만들기를 비롯, 서예가 권명원씨가 미국인들을 상대로 한글 이름을 써주는 등 미국인들이 우리의 문화를 직접 체험하고 경험하는 자리로 만들어졌습니다.
이날 행사에는 한국 전통문화 공연에 앞서 필리핀과 일본, 하와이인 들이 나서 전통 춤과 악기를 연주했습니다.
이태미 회장은 이날 행사에서 “미국에 거주하고 있는 한국의 부모와 자식들이 한국의 전통 문화를 직접 체험함으로써 자신의 뿌리를 알고 이를 통해 한국의 전통 문화를 미국인들에게 알려주는데 이번 행사의 촛점을 맞췄다”고 말했습니다.

The Asian and Pacific Islander Festival recently reigned at Westlake High School’s gym and auditorium. All through the afternoon a fabulous variety of professional and student performers exhibited their skills in martial arts, dance and fashion. Many of the acts were local performers. Others had ties to Charles County’s Black Leadership Council for Excellence (BLCE) and Korean American Association of Southern Maryland (KAASM). The festival was a joint effort from the BLCE and KAASM.
County Commissioner Reuben Collins was on hand to enjoy the performances. He told the crowd: “Anywhere else, you’d have to pay significant money to see performers of this quality.”
Several major sponsorships from the companies listed below made this festival free and open to the public, but attendance was smaller than a festival of this quality should expect.
