Dancers from the Korean American Association perform in front of La Plata Town Hall at the Charles County Arts Alliance’s ArtFest on Saturday.

For Cryz Proctor, it was about sharing her heritage.

For Michelle Lightbown, it was about sharing her hobby.

And for Sandra Blanton, it was about sharing her quilts.

Sixty-three artists each had a different reason for putting up a booth at ArtsFest on Saturday at the La Plata Town Hall grounds. The 23rd annual event, hosted by the Charles County Arts Alliance, is about promoting the original work of local artists, according to Diane Rausch, past president of the organization.

The event was first held indoors in 1992 at St. Charles Towne Center. It soon grew too large for the mall, so it moved outside, first to the parking lot and later to other venues in Charles County such as Indian Head and Cobb Island. Now in its fourth year at the La Plata Town Hall, the festival is able to have almost unlimited space for artists and food vendors. On Saturday, both sides of the town hall’s lawn were full of tables covered with artwork of just about every imaginable kind, from jewelry to paintings to knitted creations.

Rausch said the criteria for artists to show their wares is that it has to be completely original; no resales, patterns or copied work.

“It has to be something from your own imagination,” Rausch
