From KACAF:
This workshop will demonstrate what Korean Ink Painting is and how to do it. Korean Ink Painting is the art of margin. Like the pause to accentuate the rhythm of a song, marginal spaces in Korean painting have a critical role as much as the painted part. In the lesson, you will see how the harmony can be made between the blank space and painting part. Furthermore, they will show how to use the brush to make basic but magical brush strokes with ink and Korean paper. The black ink in Korean ink painting is not only black. The black color can be seen as kaleidoscopic and have very multiple effects depending on the brush stroke. It’s a very delicate but simple and fascinating way to draw.

Also it’s about depicting your mind. Before carrying out your drawing, you must illustrate the image you want to draw in your mind. It’s not only a notionary image but also the discovery of your emotion and concept toward the world. In the workshop you can have time to observe your response to the surroundings around you through visual painting.

Commitment to Safety
Per county government facility protocols, the indoor mask mandate has been reinstated for Charles County. All library visitors ages five and over must wear a mask. Social distancing should be maintained when possible, and masks and hand sanitizer remain available. For more information, visit our CCPL Information Updates.

Master Artist: Sun Doo Kim

Sun Doo Kim received his BFA and MFA from the Korean Painting Department at Chung-Ang University, in Korea, and has worked as a professor at Chung-Ang University for over 30 years. He has held numerous exhibitions internationally, including at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Korea, Posco Museum, Hakgojae Gallery in Shanghai, and the Korean Center in Washington DC. His works became permanent collections of the most representative places for arts in Korea like the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Korea, Seoul Museum of Art, and Constitutional Court of Korea. His Korean Painting is well known for his modernized and open attitude, but at the same time his variation is firmly based on the long termed rigorous practice and deep understanding of Korean painting tradition.

Seoyun Lee received her BA from Department of Education at  Busan National University in Korea and her MA from Department of  Art History at Seoul National in Korea. Then she moved to London  to pursue her art career in the graduate course of Chelsea College  of Arts(UAL) and got a graduate diploma degree. Her Korean  painting is a way to access and understand nature and humans  holistically depending on a non dualistic Asian philosophical  tradition which does not divide the world as an object and subject.  In her recent practice, her works span from traditional ink painting  techniques to contemporary media like videos and installations.
