한미문화예술재단은 한국의 문화를 미국 주류사회에 알리고 또한 예술인들의 창의성이 지속해서 향상될 수 있도록 돕고 있습니다. 이를 위해 현대 미술의 메카로 불리우는 뉴욕 첼시에서 2016년 제 11회 국제공모교류전으로 한글의 아름다움을 창의적으로 해석한 작품을 공모하여 전시하였고 2017년 또한 한국의 선( The Line of Korea)을 주제로 회화, 조각, 설치, 미디어, 디자인, 공예, 서예등 모든 미술분야에서 작품을 공모, 선정하여 뉴욕에서 전시를 갖도록 기획하였습니다.
한국의 선으로는 한국의 자연을 닮은 선, 한옥의 부드럽지만 하늘로 날아갈 듯 한 처마의 선, 한복의 자연스러운 풍성함을 보여주는 듯한 배래선등이 한국을 대표하는 선으로 많이 알려져 있습니다. 이 모든 선들은 물론 시각적으로 과하지도 덜하지도 않은 부드러운 공통적인 모습을 하고 있지만 한국인의 삶의 모습과 닮아 있다는 공통점을 가지고 있습니다.
이번 공모전은 이러한 한국의 선의 모습을 시대에 맞게 새로 발견하고 창작한 작품을 공모, 선정하려 노력하였으며 이에 공모하고 선정된 작가분들께 축하를 드립니다. 특별히 이번 국제공모교류전에 한국의 문화재인 지화 이수자이신 이석용 작가의 작품을 특별전으로 초대하여 전시하게 됨을 기쁘게 생각합니다. 이번 전시가 시각미술의 기본요소라 불리우는 선을 시작으로하여 각 미술작품에 드러난 한국의 선을 다시 음미하고 한국인의 삶을 공감할 수 있는 관문이 되기를 희망하며 한 걸음 더 나아가 이를 세계속에 드러내고 나누어 더 큰 공감대를 형성할 수 있는 기회가 되기를 기대합니다.
이번 행사를 협력해 주신 케이엔피갤러리의 김숙기 관장님과 전시를 준비하느라 수고하신 김현정, 정영순 미술분과위원장님께 특별한 감사를 표하며 여러분의 한국문화에 대한 지속적인 관심과 사랑에 감사드립니다. 앞으로도 우리의 자랑스러운 문화를 전 세계에 알리고자 노력하는 저희 한미문화예술재단을 지켜봐 주시고 격려 지원해 주시기를 부탁드립니다. 감사합니다.

– Invitation Letter –
The mission of the Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation is to expose Korean cultural art and heritage to citizens of the United States and to sustain the creative development of artists. In 2016, KACAF showcased its 11th art exhibition, “Hanguel, about its beauty”, in Chelsea, New York, often referred to as the Mecca of Modern Art. This year, we proposed the subject “The Line of Korea” for the New York exhibition and corresponding competition; entries have been received in all artistic fields, including painting, sculpture, installation, media, design, crafts, and calligraphy.
The line of Korea is commonly known as the Line of Korean scenery, the flying but smooth eaves line of a traditional Korean house and the natural line of Hanbok. All of these lines, of course, have a gentle and common appearance that is neither visually over nor under, but have a similar resemblance to a Korean life.
In this international competition, we selected works which represent new aspects of the Korean line according to current times and we congratulate the selected artists. I am especially pleased to invite Seok Yong Lee, a Korean cultural heritage artist of Korean traditional paper flowers. Starting from the line called the basic element of visual arts, we hope that this exhibition will be a gateway to experience the line of Korea and even the life of Koreans, which are revealed in each work. Furthermore, we look forward to an opportunity to taste and share this authentic beauty with the world and to form an even larger consensus.
We would like to give special thanks to the President of K & P Gallery, Souk Ki Kim, and chairpersons of KACAF art subcommittee, Hyun Jung Kim and Young Sun Jeong for this event. We appreciate your continuous interest in and love for Korean culture and look forward to your interest, support, and encouragement to KACAF which will continue to expose and educate others to our proud culture all over the world.
