Annual lunar festival highlights traditional culture

From Korean food to Korean art and dance, the annual Korean Lunar Festival had it all.

“Everyone was waiting for the Korean New Year in Charles County,” said Tammy Pantages, president of the Korean American Association of Southern Maryland and chairwoman of the Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation. The festival was presented by KAASM, KACAF and the KORUS House, a venue with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, and took place Friday at the Richard R. Clark Senior Center in La Plata. Guests participated in Korean games and painted wood block prints in celebration of Lunar Year 4708, Year of the Tiger. The Korean tradition is that people born in the tiger year often possess courage, command and leadership, said Dick Myers, a representative from the office of U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.), adding that they are blessed with charisma and the ability to think quickly and clearly. Starting the program was Jae Ok Chang, Korean-American culinary scholar and author of “Vignette of Korean Cooking,” a three-volume cookbook on traditional Korean cuisine. In a cooking demonstration, she made shrimp with pine nut dressing and twice-fried ginger chicken. Unlike Americans, Koreans don’t normally use measuring cups, instead they use “a little bit of this and a little bit of that,” said KAASM Vice President Donna Capuano during the demonstration. Jerry and Joanne McMahon of Waldorf have attended the festival since it began five years ago. “I like the different food,” said Jerry McMahon, adding that he likes to cook and plans to take a stab at the Korean dishes himself. When asked about his favorite dish served Friday, he said, “Do I have to pick just one?”

After a few minutes of thinking, McMahon responded that “the chicken is good [and the shrimp with pine nut dressing] is more like a salad, on the chilled side.” He was one of two people to participate in last month’s cooking competition at the Waldorf Senior Center. During lunch, guests had the opportunity to take pictures in traditional Korean wedding garments and watch three Korean dances — Korean modern dance by Sang Souk Kim, a group dance called “Salpuri-Chum” performed by the Korean senior ladies and Pantages’ Korean Drum Dance. After lunch, Capuano discussed the stages of the Lunar Day celebrations through a series of paintings by master painter Kyung Hak Kim who came all the way from Korea to be at the event. Kim led the group of seniorsin a woodblock demonstration using a hand-carved wooden plaque and black oil paint on rice paper.

Guests were able to choose from a rooster print to keep evil away or a tiger print to bring good luck. According to Kay Krafchik of La Plata, “the food is delicious and the costumes are beautiful.” “Last year, Tammy taught us how to play Korean drums,” she said. “That was fun. I like the audience participation.” Alma McGuire enjoyed the dancing, food and hospitality, she said. She compared the quality of the experience to that of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. “The best I’ve ever seen,” she said. “Tammy has started a wonderful thing.” For Earl Shegogue of White Plains, this was his first time attending. A friend had mentioned it to him over lunch one day. “I have Korean friends, and I’ve been to a lot of countries and seen a lot of customs, but never Asia,” Shegogue said. Like many in attendance, he “learned the food is good,” he said. “The enjoyment of food is something we all have in common,” Charles County commissioner’s President F. Wayne Cooper (D) told a reporter as he painted a woodblock print of a rooster. “The culinary arts are beautiful, second to none. The brilliant colors in their clothing are breathtaking, and the art is relieving and rewarding.” “It’s a wonderful culturally enriching experience,” he said. Also at the event was Charles County commissioners’ Vice President Edith J. Patterson (D).

Patterson has visited Japan once and China twice, but never Korea, she said noting the beauty of the culture. She hopes the county “can find a venue where more people can witness [the different] cultures that exist in Charles County.” The pair presented Pantages with the “Pathways to History” book on Charles County and thanked her for sharing the Korean culture. David K. Lee, director of ethnic commissions with the Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives, proclaimed Feb. 14 Asian Lunar New Year Day in Maryland on behalf of Gov. Martin O’Malley (D). The Korean New Year, also known as Seollal, is the first day of the lunar calendar and a three-day, family-oriented celebration filled with ancestral rituals and folk games.

남부한인회…설 분위기 물씬 남부MD한인회 ‘설기념 문화축제’…미국인들 ‘코리아’ 체험부메릴랜드한인회 제 5회 한국 설 기념 문화축제가 열려 지역 주민들에게 다양한 한국문화가 소개됐다.
남부메릴랜드한인회(회장 이태미)는 19일 낮 메릴랜드 라 플라타 소재 리처드 클라크 시니어 센터에서 문화축제를 개최하고 한국요리, 한복, 판화, 전통춤, 놀이 등을 선보였다.
한국에서 온 김경학 화백은 설과 관련된 민화 7점과 십장생도를 전시하고 참석자들이 판화를 직접 체험토록 해 인기를 끌었다. 미국인들은 흰 종이에 김경학 화백이 만든 판화를 찍고 색을 칠하는 것을 통해 판화를 체험했다.
특히 판화에 새겨진 호랑이 그림이 악귀를 물리친다는 설명이 있자 모두 판화를 받아 가기도 했다. 민화는 떡치기, 세배, 산소에서 절하는 것, 윷놀이, 연날리기, 널뛰기, 탈춤놀이 등 설과 관련된 장면을 담았다.
최근 워싱턴에 내린 폭설로 설 축제가 연기되면서 워싱턴에 3주째 머물고 있는 김 화백은 “미국인들이 이렇게 한국문화에 관심이 많은 줄 몰랐다”면서 “한국문화를 소개하려는 한인들의 열정에 감격 받았다”고 말했다.
장재옥 요리 연구가는 요리시범을 통해 ‘생강 닭’과 ‘새우·밤·배’ 샐러드를 만드는 법을 소개했다.
김상숙 씨는 기생 춤, 이태미 회장은 대북 치기, 웃브리지의 우리무용단(단장 차연자)은 살풀이춤을 각각 선보였다.
놀이 순서에는 윷놀이, 투호놀이, 화투, 한국어 낱말 맞추기 게임 등이 소개됐다. 또 신랑·신부 한국 전통복장 입기 코너가 마련돼 웨인 쿠퍼 찰스 카운티 커미셔너 의장과 이더 패터슨 커미셔너등이 직접 입어보기도 했다.
MD 찰스카운티의 웨인 쿠퍼 커미셔너 의장은 “요리와 문화를 통해 한인과 지역주민이 하나로 되는 것을 느낀다”면서 “매년 설 기념축제를 통해 한국문화를 소개하고 있는 남부메릴랜드한인회에 감사한다”고 말했다.
미찌 바카로 씨는 “오늘 처음 한국음식을 맛보고 설에 대해서 알게 됐다”면서 “기회가 된다면 한국에도 한번 가보고 싶다”고 말했다.
이태미 한인회장은 “당초 3일간 열기로 한 설 축제가 폭설로 취소됐는데 이렇게 하루라도 행사를 가질 수 있어 다행스럽게 생각한다”면서 “앞으로도 지역사회에 한국문화를 알리는 데 앞장서겠다”고 말했다.
한편 마틴 오말리 메릴랜드 주지사는 데이빗 리 주지사 아태자문위 사무국장이 이날 낭독한 선포문을 통해 “주민들이 아시아의 대명절인 설을 축하하고 이를 통해 아시아 문화를 배우길 바란다”고 말했다.
이 행사는 한미문화예술재단 USA가 주관했다.
