한국의 전통 명절 설을 축하하고 설의 의미를 미국 사회에 알리기 위한 다양한 행사가 워싱턴 일원에서 열렸습니다.
남부메릴랜드한인회와 한미문화예술재단 USA가 1월 24일 메릴랜드 월도프 소재 제이시(Jacycee) 커뮤니티 센터에서 제4회 한국 설 기념문화축제를 개최하고 미국인을 비롯한 지역 주민들에게 한국 설의 의미와 문화를 소개했습니다.
이날 행사에는 ‘권칠성과 뜬쇠’가 18발 상무와 사물놀이 등을 선보였고 이희경 무용단은 부채춤과 북춤을, 김상숙씨는 입춤을 통해 한국 전통 무용의 아름다움을 선사했습니다. 조경미 씨는 가야금 연주를 통해 한국 전통 음악의 우수성을 미국인 관객들에게 알렸습니다. 특히 미국인 관객들은 ‘권칠성과 뜬쇠’의 18발 상무 공연과 이희경 무용단의 삼북 공연 에 매료돼 ‘원더풀’을 연호하기도 했습니다.
권태면 총영사는 인사말을 통해 “매년 설 축제를 열어 지역 주민들에게 한국문화를 알리는 이태미 회장에게 감사를 표한다”면서 “설의 진정한 의미는 부모를 공경하고 가족 간에 정을 나누는 것에 있다”고 말했습니다.
공연에 앞서 열린 예능 장기대회에서는 판소리 병창을 한 임태규 군(9)이 1등의 영예를 안았고 2등은 부채춤을 공연한 오춘난 양, 3등은 노래를 부른 틴 한 군이 각각 수상했습니다. 1등을 차지한 임 군은 상금으로 400달러를 받았고 2등과 3등에게는 각각 200달러와 150달러가 상금으로 각각 주어졌습니다.
마틴 오말리 메릴랜드 주지사는 이날 데이빗 리 주 아태국장이 낭독한 선포문을 통해 “2009년 1월 26일을 설로 선포한다”면서 “주민들이 아시아의 대명절인 설을 축하하고 이를 통해 아시아 문화를 배우기를 바란다”고 말했습니다.
한편, 수도권메릴랜드한인회는 1월 25일 몽고메리카운티 게이더스버그 소재 레이크 포리스트 몰에서 쇼핑객들을 대상으로 풍물패의 사물놀이와 붓글씨 시범 공연을 선보여 눈길을 끌었습니다.
이날 행사에서 서예가 권명원씨는 서예 시범을 선보였고, 워싱턴한인천주교회의 청소년 풍물패는 사물놀이를 선사해 박수갈채를 받았습니다. 특히 행사에서 필 앤드류 몽고메리 카운티 의장이 직접 참석해 설 기념일 선포문을 낭독했습니다. 신 회장은 “이날 행사는 한국 문화를 주류사회에 알리는 좋은 기회가 됐다”고 말했습니다.
Charles County Commissioners Celebrate Korean Lunar New Year

Commissioner President Wayne Cooper said, “Say Hay Boke-Mahn He Pah Du Say Oh,” (which literally means ‘many blessings to you in the New Year’) when he greeted an overflow crowd at the fourth annual Korean Lunar Festival.
Cooper was joined by Commissioner Vice President Edith J. Patterson, along with civic and community leaders, who all came together at the Waldorf Jaycees Community Center in celebration of one of the most important holidays in Korean culture.
Commissioner Cooper cited current census trends that show Korean Americans represent 3.5 percent of Charles County’s total population.
“I think these figures say a lot for our County and its attractiveness…not only to Korean Americans, but to all races and nationalities,” he noted.
Cooper and Patterson presented a proclamation and gifts from the County heralding the significance of the Korean Lunar Festival, and the many contributions made by Korean Americans.
“This festival represents a visual display of the extraordinary talents and artists of the Korean community. I continue to be amazed at the verve of the youth, and view this event as a venue for all of us to broaden our cultural horizons,” said Patterson.
The Korean Lunar Festival is jointly sponsored by the Korean American Association of Southern Maryland and the Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation. Additional sponsors included the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, The Maryland Governor’s Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs, the Black Leadership Council for Excellence, the Charles County Department of Community Services, Clark Senior Center, and the Charles County Department of Health.

Southern Maryland residents will have the opportunity to experience the Korean New Year and Korean culture at a public celebration hosted by The Korean American Association of Southern Maryland and
Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009 at the Waldorf Jaycee Community Center (6-10 p.m., at 3090 Crain Highway, Waldorf, MD 20601). Known as Seollal in Korean, this important traditional holiday celebrates the first day of the year based on the lunar calendar, which officially falls on Jan. 26 in 2009.
KAASM, KACAF has held its annual New Year celebration since 2006, and this year will not only focus on introducing the culture of Korea, but will also include a variety of activities including talent shows, auctions, and games. At a meeting on Jan. 12, organizers agreed that the first event of the celebration will be a talent show with ten competing teams. Seollal is traditionally a time to reconnect with family members and the community.
The Celebration will also feature a variety of fun traditional activites, including calligraphy writing, Korean paper folding, traditional dance, and musical performances using Korean percussion instruments. The artworks of Kwon Myung-won will also be auctioned.

남부메릴랜드한인회(회장 이태미)는 24일 오후 미국인들이 대거 참석한 가운데 메릴랜드 월도프 소재 제이시(Jacycee) 커뮤니티 센터에서 설 기념 문화축제를 가졌다.
‘권칠성과 뜬쇠’는 18발 상무와 사물놀이 및 소구춤, 설장구, 이희경 무용단은 부채춤과 북춤, 김상숙 씨는 입춤, 조경미 씨는 가야금 연주를 통해 한국 전통음악의 아름다움을 선사했다.
특히 ‘권칠성과 뜬쇠’의 18발 상무 공연과 이희경 무용단의 삼북 공연 때 관객들은 ‘원더풀’의 탄성을 자아내며 한국 국악의 아름다움에 흠뻑 빠지는 분위기였다.
권태면 총영사는 인사말을 통해 “매년 설 축제를 열어 지역주민들에게 한국문화를 알리는 이태미 남부메릴랜드 한인회장에게 감사를 표한다”면서 “설의 진정한 의미는 부모를 공경하고 가족 간에 정을 나누는 것에 있다”고 말했다.
특별 공연에 앞서서는 10개 팀이 참가한 가운데 장학금 수여 예능 장기대회가 열렸으며 1등의 영광은 판소리 병창을 한 임태규 군(9)이 차지했다. 임 군은 이날 단소 부문에도 참가, 눈길을 끌었다.
2등상은 부채춤을 공연한 오춘난 양, 3등상은 노래를 부른 틴 한 군이 각각 받았다.
1등을 한 임 군에게는 상금 400달러가 주어졌으며 2등과 3등에게는 각각 200달러와 150달러가 주어졌다.
경연대회에서 청소년들은 부채춤, 가야금 병창, 판소리 연주, 피아노 및 기타 연주, 노래 등을 통해 장기를 겨뤘다.
설 기념 문화축제는 기념식, 경연대회, 경매, 식사, 공연, 게임 순으로 진행됐으며 경매 순서에는 서예가 권명원 씨의 고문족자, 종이공예가 한기선 씨의 종이공예품, 꽃꽂이 전문가 대니얼 송의 꽃꽂이 작품, 서양화가 강민정 씨의 서양화 등이 경매에 붙여졌다.
행사장에는 서예, 종이공예, 서양화, 꽃꽂이 , 풍선 전시회도 마련돼 관객들은 공연뿐만 아니라 전시도 즐겼다.
한편 마틴 오말리 메릴랜드 주지사는 이날 데이빗 리 주 아태국장이 낭독한 선포문을 통해 “2009년 1월 26일을 설로 선포한다”면서 “주민들이 아시아의 대명절인 설을 축하하고 이를 통해 아시아 문화를 배우길 바란다”고 말했다. 선포문은 이태미 회장에게 주어졌다.
우태창 워싱턴 버지니아 노인연합회 회장, 이정숙 메릴랜드 여성회 회장, 임유순 한미문화예술재단 이사는 이날 주지사 감사패를 받았다.
이번 행사는 한인회가 주최하고 한미문화예술재단 USA가 주관했다.
Local Korean communities in DC metro area celebrate the Lunar New Year – January 26, 2009
Monday, January 26, 2009 marks the first day of the year, according to the lunar calendar, and is celebrated by many Asian cultures as New Year’s Day. In Korea, the Lunar New Year is known as seollal, and is considered to be one of the most important traditional holidays.
Many Korean-Americans in the Washington DC metropolitan community, not only continue to honor the traditions of their Korean ancestors, but also strive to share these traditions with their American neighbors.
At Lake Forest Mall in Gaithersburg, Maryland on Sunday, January 25, 2009, the Korean and Chinese communities of Montgomery County, celebrated the Lunar New Year with a commemorative event. Also in attendance, in addition to the many members of the Korean and Chinese communities, were local politicians and other various members of the Montgomery county community.
Featured activities included a traditional Korean calligraphy demonstration by calligrapher Myung-won Kwon, and a poong-mul-nori (a traditional Korean instrumental ensemble) performance by students from the St. Andrew Kim Korean Catholic Church, in Olney, Maryland.
Elsewhere, in Southern Maryland, roughly 200 people gathered on Saturday, January 24, 2009, for the annual Lunar New Year celebration hosted by the Korean American Association of Southern Maryland. Working also with the Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation, the event featured a variety of different activities, including Korean calligraphy writing and paper-folding, as well as traditional Korean dance and instrumental performances.
The event took place at the Waldorf Jaycee Community Center in Waldorf, MD and was attended by many members of the Southern Maryland community.
In Northern Virginia, the KORUS House of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Korean Air, and Washington Dulles International Airport hosted two traditional Korean dance performances by the Asian American Arts Center. The first performance took place at 10:30 a.m. inside of the gates at Dulles International, while a second repeat performance took place outside of the security checkpoint at 12:00 p.m.
As seollal was historically celebrated by the Korean people as a communal gathering, with neighbors visiting from villages far and near, it is fitting that the Korean-Americans of the DC metropolitan area choose to share the seollal celebration with their respective American communities.
