Upon arrival, we took time to explore detailed exhibits of traditional Korean food, calligraphy and clothing. Where American formal clothes tend to favor black or muted colors, traditional Korean formal clothes are spectacularly colorful. All through the crowd and during an on-stage fashion show, floor-length ensembles of stiff silk and satin whispered of richness, history and confidence as they rustled past.
I moved from the clothing display to calligraphy. Kwon Myoung-Won (master calligrapher) bent carefully over his work, fulfilling a long line of requests for free samples of his craft. Beyond Mr. Kwon, lay a long display table of beautifully prepared traditional foods. Ladies behind the table graciously answered questions about ingredients and purposes.
Before we moved into the banquet room, my husband stopped at a front table overflowing with Korean flags, maps and booklets of information. The Consulate for the Republic of Korea in Washington, D.C. generously donated all the materials which were free to anyone at the festival who asked for them.
The main hall of the Church teemed with tables of families and groups waiting for the ceremonies to begin. The emcees introduced the Association’s honored guests in both Korean and English.
After each introduction, a child in traditional dress brought the honoree a beautifully wrapped bouquet of flowers. Commissioner Wayne Cooper accepted a token of appreciation from KAASM president Tammy Pantages for Charles County’s cooperation with the association’s work.
The Consul General, Kwon Teamyon, of the Korean Embassy in D.C. offered words of greeting and appreciation. Consul Kwon was presented with the seal of Charles County.
President of the southeastern U.S. federation of Korean associations, Eugene Yu told the assembly that Korean-Americans (now numbering 2.5 million) are the fastest growing ethnic group in the county. He encouraged Korean-Americans in the audience to respect American culture and learn to blend into it even as they remember old-world traditions. President Yu explained that although as a nation it is vitally important for us to be unified, diversity is also one of our great national strengths. He received a rousing round of applause when he expressed his opinion that “Americans have the best form of government at any level” and “We are far, far better off than being anywhere else in the world.”
The buffet supper following the introductions was marvelous. It was nearly impossible to leave the line without your plate overflowing with traditional foods. After successfully avoiding sushi for years, I finally gave in a tried it. For a seaweed, rice, raw fish and vegetable combination, it was surprisingly good. The steamed dumplings were different than expected but hearty and delicious. The variety of foods impressed me. Kimchi was as spicy as I remembered and the rice dumpling desert was sweet and rich.
After supper we settled comfortably about our tables for the entertainment. We were treated to exhibitions of folk music and instruments, dance and games. Photos of most of the entertainers are featured in the video accompanying this article. The video’s music is a portion of the performance by Jung So Yeun on the Kayageum, a twelve stringed lap instrument, hauntingly beautiful.
The folk song by Oak Joo Moon was very different from the kind of music I enjoy. However, the sound was so fascinating that I quickly found myself enjoying the performance a great deal.
The Sahn-jo dance easily rivaled professional ballet performances I’ve attended at the Kennedy Center. It contained similar grace and structure; but added further complexity and richness through the rippling movements of the dancer’s gown.
The Samulmoei Quartet of percussion instruments was a thundering crowd favorite. The performers themselves gave as much energy to the performance as their music did. The quartet gives free performances at their theater on Times Square in New York City and hope to open a second theater in D.C. next fall.
The Korean Lunar Festival marks the eve of the new lunar year. SImply speaking, its traditions center around the family and particularly on paying respect to the family’s elders. The house and its members are thoroughly cleaned, the lights remain lit all night, and no one sleeps so they can greet the new year clean, ready and bright-eyed. It struck me as a remarkably more meaningful set of traditions than staying awake to get drunk, make noise and kiss the person next to you (however fun that may also be). The Korean New Year is all about family and the families at the festival looked to be having a marvelous time together.
Compliments to the Korean American Association of Southern Maryland for a successful festival. My husband and I have no ties to the local Korean-American community but we felt welcome and included. 흥겨운 ‘설날 놀이 한마당’에 모두가 “얼~쑤”
남부 메릴랜드 한인회 ‘설 문화 축제’ 열기 가득
지난 17일(토) 저녁, 한국 최대 명절인 설날을 하루 앞둔 메릴랜드 찰스 카운티에서는 한국 고유의 무용과 음악과 놀이가 한데 어우러지고, 한국인과 미국인이 다함께 어깨춤을 추는 흥겨운 놀이 한마당이 펼쳐졌다.
남부 메릴랜드 한인회(회장 이태미)가 주최하고 주미대사관과 코리아 모니터가 특별후원한 ‘2007년 설 문화 축제’가 권태면 총영사, 코리아 모니터 임석구 사장, 동남부 한인 연합 유진철 회장, 한미문화 예술재단 이난희 회장, 웨인쿠퍼 찰스 카운티 커미셔너 등 한국인과 미국인 3백여명이 참석한 가운데 월도프 소재 South Potomac Church에서 성황리에 열렸다.
사물놀이패 ‘뜬쇠’ 공연때 열기 최고조 전통 탈 행진으로 시작한 행사는 판소리 명창 문옥주씨의 춘향가, 춤 보존회 뉴욕지부장인 홍영옥씨의 산조춤, 가야금 연주 등 한국의 멋진 가락과 전통춤이 이어지며 열기를 더해갔다. 특히 이날 행사의 하이라이트인 사물놀이패 ‘뜬쇠’ 공연때는 참석자들이 가락에 맞추어 어깨춤을 추는가 하면, 공연 중간 중간에 기립 박수가 터져나오고 일부는 환호성으로 화답했다. 칼리웨이 침례교회 대니얼 무어 목사는 “한국 전통문화 공연을 처음 접했지만 아주 멋있는 무대이며 사물놀이패 공연에 아주 강열한 인상을 받았다”고 말했다.
사물놀이패 ‘뜬쇠’는 뉴욕 브로드웨이에 해외최초 국악 공연장인 ‘세븐스타’를 개관하여 우리의 음악과 춤을 미국 주류사회에 전파하는데 중추적인 역할을 하고 있다. 이들은 워싱턴 지역에도 한국전통문화교육센터 설립을 추진 중이며 9월쯤 개관할 것 이라고 말했다. 마지막으로 참석자 전원은 깊어가는 겨울밤에 라인 댄스와 더불어 우리 고유 명절인 설날을 가족과 함께 즐겁고 유익한 하루를 보냈다.
“전통문화 공연 자주 열자” 축사 한편 이날 공연에 앞서 이태미 회장은 개회사를 통해 “우리의 전통문화를 2세들에게 알려주고 다른 이웃 주민들과 나누고 싶다”고 행사의 의미를 전했으며, 권태면 총영사는 축사에서 “오늘 행사를 통해 한국의 아름다운 풍속과 문화를 한인2세 들에게 전해주고 미국인들에게도 소개하는 좋은 계기가 되길 바란다”고 말했다.
이어서 코리아 모니터 임석구 사장은 “모든것이 뜻대로만 되지 않는 힘든 이민생활 속에서도, 커가는 아이들의 눈망울을 바라보며 희망과 기대와 미래를 찾게 된다. 오늘 같은 설잔치는 바로 말로 다할 수 없는 많은 것들을 아이들한테 던져주는 중요한 시간이다. 이러한 기회를 가능한 많이 접할 수 있도록 해주는 것이 바로 부모님의 중요한 역할”이라며 2세들에게 우리의 전통문화를 체험할 수 있는 기회를 많이 가질수 있도록 이러한 공연을 자주 개최할 필요가 있다고 강조했다.
이어 한미문화예술재단(회장 이난희)은 월도프 지역 3개 고등학교에 각 학교당 1천불씩 장학금을 전달하는 행사도 함께 가져 참석자들의 눈길을 끌었다.

설 문화축제 성황, 주민등 5백명 참가
남부메릴랜드한인회(회장 이태미)가 주최한 ‘제 2회 설기념 문화축제’에 500여명의 지역이참가해 성황을 이뤘다.17일 저녁 찰스카운티내 사우스 포토맥에서 열린 행사에는 특히 20여한국 입양아 가정과 미국인 교사 100여명이 참가해 눈길을 끌었다.식전 행사로 20여종의 전통 떡과 한과, 단술 전시회는 물론 서예가 권명원씨의 붓글씨, 한복과 한지인형 시회가 열려 한국 전통 문화를 알렸다.또 주미대사관 코러스하우스(원장 이현표)은 한국관련 홍보자료, 독도가 표시된 지도 및 소형 태극기 등을 무료로 나눠주었다.본 행사에서는 100여명의 한복차림을 한 어린이들이 율동과 함께 ‘까치까치 설날은’ ‘무궁화 무궁화 우리나라꽃’ 등을 부른 후 관객들에게 새해 절을 올려 큰 박수를 받았다.
이밖에도 인사동 한복이 후원한 한복 패션쇼, 청소년들의 ‘탈춤‘ 공연, 문옥주씨의 ‘춘향가’, 정소연씨의 가야금 연주, 홍영옥씨의 ‘꿈속의 사랑’을 주제로 한 산조춤, 권칠성 공연단 등의 사물놀이 공연이 이어졌다.
또 널뛰기와 제기차기, 한국어 노래자랑 등이 마련돼 설날 문화를 체험하는 시간을 갖기도 했다. 권태면 주미총영사는 “오늘 행사를 통해 한국의 아름다운 풍속과 문화를 한인 2세들에게 전해주고 미국인들에게도 소개하는 좋은 계기가 되길 바란다”고 축사를 전했다.웨인 쿠퍼 찰스 카운티 커미셔너는 “카운티내 한인들이 3,0 00여명 살고 있다”면서 “풍부한 한국 문화를 알리는데 큰 역할을 하는 한인회를 치하한다”고 말했다. 이태미 회장은 “한국의 전통 문화를 2세들에게 알려주고 다른 이웃주민들과 나누고 싶다”고 말했다.
